Autogyro making vertical descent landings; engine failure practice. You might ask why perform vertical descents and power off landings: They are not just done for fun. Every pilot must spend considerable time practicing for an engine out emergency in flight. So virtually every time I go up I practice power failure recovery landings. With the engine at idle the only power you have is gravity, but it's like sand trickling through your fingers. You have to use it before it runs out. You immediately put the gyro into the best conservation of energy mode, best glide, no side slip and as few turns as possible. A suitable landing location decision has to be made quite quickly. In this particular case, the selected landing location is almost directly below the gyro. Plus, you prefer to land into w...

In sum, the near and longer term outlook for U.S. nuclear power is poor for reasons summarized below. There is little the USG can do to influence decisively the outcome over the next decade because this will mainly be determined by the economic competitiveness of nuclear units in many markets. We make a number of suggestions for nuclear generation over the longer term. Many factors influence closure decisions including anticipated electricity demand, misalignment of base load capacity, market pr...

On May 22, 1960, at 3:11 pm (19:11 UTC) the largest earthquake ever recorded by instruments struck southern Chile with a magnitude we now know to be at least 9.5. This earthquake generated a tsunami that traveled through every ocean on earth, though large, dangerous waves only impacted the coastlines around the Pacific Ocean. Chile suffered the greatest impact, with tsunami waves reaching as high as 25 m or 82 ft., killing an estimated 2000 people there. Outside of Chile the tsunami was worst on the opposite side of the planet in Japan, where waves reached as high as 6.3 m or over 20 ft and killed 139 people. In between and halfway across the Pacific Ocean Hawaii suffered the second-worst tsunami in its recorded history--only the Aleutian Islands tsunami of 1946 was worse. It killed 61 people in the town of Hilo with waves reaching as high as 10.7 m or about 35 ft. and all Hawaiian Islands experienced waves well over 1 m or 3 ft. The Philippines also lost 21 people to waves recorded as high as 1.5 m or nearly 5 ft, and two more people died in California from waves reaching 2.2 m or over 7 ft. high. Elsewhere around the Pacific Ocean tsunami waves reached as high as 12.2 m or 40 ft at Pitcairn Island (U.K), 7.0 m or 23 ft. in Russia (Kamchatka), 5.0 m or over 16 ft. in New Zealand, 4.9 m or 16 ft. in (Western) Samoa, 2.4 m or about 8 ft. in French Polynesia, 2.1 m or 7 ft. in Canada, 1.8 m or about 6 ft. in Papua New Guinea, and 1.2 m or about 4 ft. in Mexico. In the United States and it territories 2.4 m or about 8 ft. in American Samoa, 2.3 m or 7.5 ft. in Alaska, and 1.8 m or about 6 ft. in Oregon. A global tsunami warning system did not exist in 1960 and the Honolulu Magnetic and Seismic Observatory, which would later become the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), did issue tsunami warnings for this earthquake to the State of Hawaii many hours in advance of its arrival (it would take almost 15 hours for the first wave to reach Hawaii). As a result of this tsunami the United Nations would set up the Pacific Tsunami Warning System (PTWS) in 1965 with the Honolulu Observatory as its headquarters. Today, more than 50 years since the Great Chile Earthquake and the establishment of the PTWS, the PTWC will issue tsunami warnings in minutes, not hours, after a major earthquake occurs, and will forecast how large any resulting tsunami will be as it is still crossing the ocean. The PTWC can also create an animation of a historical tsunami with the same tool that it uses to determine tsunami hazards in real time for any tsunami today: the Real-Time Forecasting of Tsunamis (RIFT) forecast model. The RIFT model takes earthquake information as input and calculates how the waves move through the world’s oceans, predicting their speed, wavelength, and amplitude. This animation shows these values through the simulated motion of the waves and as they travel through the world’s oceans one can also see the distance between successive wave crests (wavelength) as well as their height (half-amplitude) indicated by their color. More importantly, the model also shows what happens when these tsunami waves strike land, the very information that the PTWC needs to issue tsunami hazard guidance for impacted coastlines. From the beginning the animation shows all coastlines covered by colored points. These are initially a blue color like the undisturbed ocean to indicate normal sea level, but as the tsunami waves reach them they will change color to represent the height of the waves coming ashore, and often these values are higher than they were in the deeper waters offshore. The color scheme is based on the PTWC’s warning criteria, with blue-to-green representing no hazard (less than 30 cm or ~1 ft.), yellow-to-orange indicating low hazard with a stay-off-the-beach recommendation (30 to 100 cm or ~1 to 3 ft.), light red-to-bright red indicating significant hazard requiring evacuation (1 to 3 m or ~3 to 10 ft.), and dark red indicating a severe hazard possibly requiring a second-tier evacuation (greater than 3 m or ~10 ft.). Toward the end of this simulated 36 hours of activity the wave animation will transition to the “energy map” of a mathematical surface representing the maximum rise in sea-level on the open ocean caused by the tsunami, a pattern that indicates that the kinetic energy of the tsunami was not distributed evenly across the oceans but instead forms a highly directional “beam” such that the tsunami was far more severe in the middle of the “beam” of energy than on its sides. This pattern also generally correlates to the coastal impacts; note how those coastlines directly in the “beam” are hit by larger waves than those to either side of it. ---------- Earthquake source used: Fujii, Y. and K. Satake, Slip Distribution and Seismic Moment of the 2010 and 1960 Chilean Earthquakes Inferred from Tsunami Waveforms and Coastal Geodetic Data, Pure and Applied Geophysics, 170, 1493-1509, 2012

Wildlife, including turtles and crabs, have been impacted by the garbage that has been dumped on the island’s shores, according to researchers. Trying to clean the island’s beaches would be pointless because of the lack of visitors and sheer volume of trash that washes up there daily, report co-author Alex Bond told the Washington Post. He advised people to use alternatives to plastic, such as bamboo toothbrushes and canvas carrier bags, and to bring your own mug to Starbucks.

Plus, you prefer to land into wind if there is more than a breeze (5kts). Your landing will have to be precise and you don't get a second chance. This why every normal landing should be on the numbers to practice that precision. Gyros can't stall but you can't just land vertically. With the engine at idle the gyro will descend quite rapidly (up to 700 ft/ min) somewhat irrelevant of the forward airspeed. You must be careful not to fly behind the power curve (flying too slow, below 45 kts), at low altitude. The slower you fly the gyro below 50 mph, the more power is required to maintain altitude (level flight). It takes time for the gyro to regain forward airspeed, even if full engine power is applied. Recover too late and you will mush (unable to maintain altitude, full engine power unable to overcome) into the ground with high vertical velocity. Not to be confused with stalling. This can happen on takeoff and landing, there are many examples of gyros mushing into the ground on YouTube. The altimeter displays height above sea level, not height above the ground. The ground elevation at this location is 250ft. The vertical descent with zero forward airspeed should not be continued below 500 ft AGL (Above Ground Level), 750 ft indicated on the altimeter. In the video, I recover as low as 500 ft indicated, 250 AGL, but notice I have 30 kts forward airspeed, not zero. Airspeed indicator, top left; Altimeter, top right; Rotor RPM, far middle left; Engine RPM, middle left; Compass, bottom right. Flying: The open cockpit flying makes flying real, you can feel the air and get a fabulous view of the outside world. It is the purest experience of flight. The low sided cockpit makes it feel like you have no visible means of support. The aircraft is not a protective shell, but an extension of your body, moving as you move. It's a brilliant experience, I always feel elated for hours after flying. This gyro is wonderful to fly, sensitive to control inputs but quite stable. The gyro is a MTO Sport 912 ULS with modified big bore motor producing 130 HP. Comments and video are not intended as instruction on flying a gyro. Never attempt to fly a gyro without adequate tuition by a qualified CFI. Please do not attempt to copy any flying maneuvers shown in this video as they could result in serious injury and death!!! Filmed , date, 2017 Cameras, Sony Action Cam FDR X3000, Sony FDR AX100, Sony HDR PJ790V, & Sony RX 100 M5. Music credit: "Tuesday Afternoon", by the "Moody Blues", album, "Days of Future Passed". Email to John Podesta. Outlook for U.S. Nuclear Power. August 13, 2014. We have given consideration to the following two questions: (1) what is the likely attrition in the U.S. nuclear fleet in the near and longer term? .and (2) what measures might the U.S. government take to reverse this trend? In sum, the near and longer term outlook for U.S. nuclear power is poor for reasons summarized below. There is little the USG can do to influence decisively the outcome over the next decade because this will mainly be determined by the economic competitiveness of nuclear units in many markets. We make a number of suggestions for nuclear generation over the longer term. Many factors influence closure decisions including anticipated electricity demand, misalignment of base load capacity, market prices and dispatch rules, projected growth in nuclear O&M and capital costs, and perhaps more stringent safety requirements in response to Fukushima. It is unlikely that all eligible reactors will receive permission to operate out to 80 years of life. The credit for carbon free electricity generation required to bridge this gap would be very large and there are many other opportunities in the economy to reduce carbon emissions at lower cost. New LWR construction starts are unlikely if the gas price remains at its current low level as anticipated for at least a decade. 5. What about the new Small Modular Technology (SMR)? The DOE is supporting the development of SMRs with the objective of mass producing many small reactors at low cost and ganging them together as needed to meet demand. Instead of pursuing ever larger units to achieve lower cost, mass produce many smaller units in a factory setting and achieve low cost through production scale economies and ‘learning’.. There is no plan for how these costs will be shared between the government and the private sector. It is important for the U.S. to remain engaged in nuclear energy even if the future is clouded. could lay the groundwork for a Nuclear 2.0 future. What might the USG do? Establish a technological and governance basis for domestic and global nuclear expansion in the long term. Establish that policy and regulations will value existing and new nuclear generation on the same basis as other carbon-free electricity sources. This will give utilities and investors confidence that nuclear energy is an accepted part of the energy future of the U.S. Convene an international nuclear safety evaluation designed to establish requirements for new reactors capable of achieving expected safety levels an order of magnitude beyond the current level. Continue to support the U.S. nonproliferation policy. The key elements are: ensure that the U.S. is a reliable supplier, to encourage international mechanisms to provide enrichment services and stockpiles of low-enriched fuel, and avoid reprocessing of commercial spent fuel. Establish the NRC as the global leader in licensing innovative nuclear technologies. The key elements are to create a separate NRC unit dedicated to regulatory development and licensing of innovative nuclear technologies; establish a clear roadmap for licensing approval of advanced technologies, with well-defined milestones. 6. Upgrade and internationalize DOE’s nuclear RD&D programs. Priority areas are: (a) hybrid nuclear energy storage systems suitable for grid with high levels of intermittent generation, wind and solar, (b) uranium recovery from sea water, (c) advanced waster disposal technologies such as deep bore holes, (d) offer INEL and other DOE national laboratories as sites that domestic and international industry can use for development, testing, and demonstration of advanced nuclear technologies, (e) support materials R&D and testing that validate reactor lifetime extension beyond 60 years. 7. Attention to nuclear waste storage and disposal is important to establish public confidence in nuclear energy. Chaired by Lee Hamilton and Brent Scowcroft that lays out a comprehensive and practical approach to nuclear waste management. An especially important step to signal progress on this issue is authorizing Away From Reactor (AFR) storage for spent commercial nuclear fuel. At the present time expanding or extending the nuclear loan guarantees is unpromising. Also, the SMR initiative is not at a stage that justifies a costly “crash” program and cannot be relied upon to offer a safe and economical source of electricity in the post 2025 period. Of course, we will be pleased to learn any reactions you may have to these ideas. http://www.undergroundworldnews.com When the mutineers of the HMS Bounty landed on Pitcairn Island in 1790, they believed they had found the perfect refuge: a fertile Eden in a remote corner of the South Pacific where Capt. William Bligh and the rest of the British navy could never find them. Some 225 years later, the island and its waters may soon become a sanctuary of a different kind. The British government said Wednesday that it intends to designate a vast area around the island as the world’s largest protected marine reserve, assuring that its natural riches will remain pristine for generations to come. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/03/18/tiny-island-of-mutiny-of-the-bounty-fame-to-anchor-vast-new-marine-sanctuary/?postshare=3701426770166022
